FoundationsWomen's Rugby at the University of Washington started to come together in 2001. It was officially founded against a match with Western Washington University in 2002. Though it started small, over the years the team has slowly but surely gained players and support.
With the few members who saw potential in the team, the first two influential coaches were Heidi Whitman for the backs and Sarah Veatch for the forwards. The knowledge both Whitman and Veatch gave to the team, as well as the team members' strong desire to learn rugby, laid the foundations for something great to come. |
Recent HistoryToday the team continues to grow with 30+ active members. The team strives to have a successful season through teaching each other as well as having a family dynamic on and off the pitch.
UW Women's Rugby is a part of the Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union, and just recently moved to Division 1 League. The competitive games are against other Division 1 schools, such as Oregon State, Washington State, University of Oregon, Western Washington, and Boise State. Friendly games are also played against Division 2 teams like Seattle University and Eastern Washington. In spring of 2022, the team took first in the league and made an appearance in the regional tournament where 8 of the top 16 DI club teams competed for a spot in the national championship. The team is full of competitive, driven girls who have faith in a successful 2021-2022 season. |
